American Soldiers in London

Watercolour - Signed dated and inscribed

Image Area: 12.5ins x 10.5ins

As soon as the United States entered the theater of war in 1941, soldiers started to arrive in England.

The President of the US declared war on Germany and Japan on 8 December 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The US military began preparing for war. Navy and Air Force began moving material to support their allies but now in an official capacity whereas before it was on lease.

The first infantry sent to Europe were the 1st Infantry Division and the 34th Infantry Division. They arrived in England in 1941.

This painting by Norman was in 1943 and clearly shows Americans enjoying themselves in London, quite probably between engagements and when on leave or even in the early preparations for D-day
