Through the Window

Ink Drawing

Image 120mm x 100mm - Framed 255mm x 210mm

On first viewing this drawing, it appears to be two children in all innocence looking out of the window with the boy pointing towards the activity going on in the courtyard. It is only on closer inspection that the scene outside is far from innocent. A poor unfortunate is being flogged.

Prior to 1948 when flogging was abolished in England it was common practice to chastise children by flogging with the cane especially in boarding schools
