Spanish Civil War 1936

Pen and ink drawing- Signed dated and inscribed

Image Area: 9ins x 7ins

This simple drawing of an old woman perhaps sums up the Spanish Civil War and how it affected ordinary people. The woman is sitting in a desolate landscape with shelled buildings behind her there the soldiers are fighting yet her plight is shown in the drawing by the rocks on her plate instead of food and the broken pitcher. She is emaciated, her flesh is so tight that the bones show through her skin and she has that gaunt look of despair on her face

A drawing of such quality as this can only come from an artist who has genuine feelings for his subject and the pain they are suffering. Norman was an individual who showed great feeling for his fellow human beings, none more so than in this work.
